Vintage Graphics is delighted to be able to offer an exclusive collection of images by Elijah Yeoman, a photographer working in Barnard Castle in the latter part of the C19th.
Like his Whitby-based contemporary Frank Sutcliffe, Yeoman was a professional photographer who has left a comprehensive body of work reflecting Victorian rural life in Teesdale and the surrounding areas.
Although not as flamboyant in style as Sutcliffe, Yeomans gentle depiction of country towns and villages, emerging industries and dramatic landscapes offer a fascinating insight into the changing face of North East England in the late 1800s.
The largest collection of Yeomans work is in the possession of The Bowes Museum, and it is with their kind permission that Vintage Graphics is able to offer a selection of the best of his work, along with further images from private collections.
Since most of the surviving originals are contact printed from the original quarter or half-plate glass negatives, the majority retain a high level of detail which can be seen for the first time in these high-definition reproductions. Each original albumen, platinum or silver print has been scanned at high resolution before undergoing digital restoration to repair any damage to the print. However, rather like restoring a piece of antique furniture, great care is taken to retain the character and patina of the original, and in particular to preserve the delicate colouring where prints have been gold or copper toned.
As with other Vintage Graphics editions, these images are printed onto the finest archive quality fine art paper, and are individually numbered. They are exclusive to Vintage Graphics and The Bowes Museum, and the digital files will be deleted once the limited edition is complete.
