This peaceful image of Coniston in the Lake District dates from 1895 and shows the village around the lake, with Coniston Old Man in the background. The field in the foreground has grazing cattle with a farmer and his sheepdog, against a backdrop of a traditional lakeland farm. Coniston Hall can be seen in the centre of the picture on the far side of the lake.
This is a classic Victorian romantic image of the Lake District, with all the elements of the pastoral idyll so characteristic of the photographs of the period. The photographer is believed to be R Rivers, whose monogram can be faintly seen in the top right of the photograph of Borrowdale (VP 019).
