A delightful portrait of a Lake District couple on the steps of their cottage in Wastdale, Cumbria. Dating from about 1870, this image is reproduced from an albumen original by Alfred Pettitt, who had a thriving portrait photography business in Keswick at this time. The picture is unusual in depicting ordinary Lakeland working people, in contrast to the more formal portraiture produced by Pettitt in his studio.
