This exceptionally fine photograph of the cathedral at Durham is taken from the original half plate glass negative and is believed to be by Matthew Auty of Tynemouth (see also Durham Rooftops VP 039 in the Vintage Photographs section of the catalogue). It shows the familiar but spectacular view of the castle seen from the opposite bank of the River Wear with the water mill in the foreground. Wonderfully preserved and richly detailed with a full range of subtle tones, this must be one of the finest images of this subject from the period. Circa 1880.
