The Stirling Single was the most advanced and powerful locomotive of its day, hauling passenger trains on the East Coast main line between York and London at speeds of up to 85mph. Built in Doncaster from 1870, they were quite rightly the pride of the Great Northern Railway locomotive crews. This image is likely to have been taken soon after the engine was built, and is a testament to the fine quality of Victorian engineering.
