This toll gate formerly stood at the Rokeby side of the Abbey Bridge and collected tolls from both pedestrians and vehicles. Until its closure in the 1950s, the toll-collectors lived in the two tiny buildings on either side if the road, living in one and sleeping in the other.
The toll collectors appear to have supplemented their income by selling chocolate and drinks to passers-by, as the table on the left has empty bottles and on the wall is a Cadbury’s Chocolate sign.
The wasp-waisted collector is holding a large plate, presumably used to collect the toll. On the wall beside her is a range of postcards, most of which appear to be Yeoman photographs!
