Dairy Bridge (which crosses the River Greta at the 'Meeting of the Waters' where the Greta joins the River Tees) was one of Yeoman's favourite subjects. The setting is highly romantic in the Victorian taste, a single graceful span crossing a dramatic gorge framed by lush vegetation, topped by a delightful cottage with an inviting balcony overlooking the river. This view looks downstream towards the Tees, showing the impressive groge to full effect. This version has subtle and sparkling light, and is much improved by the addition of a female figure (almost certainly yeoman's daughter) looking down from the bridge, which adds much to the period authenticity of the image.
This is a particularly good example of the locally-known optical illusion in which the rock structure makes the water appear to be flowing uphill. Although the river appears to be flowing towards us, in fact we are looking downstream towards the Tees.
