Raymond Ewry - Standing Jump (LO 001)
[30cm x 42cm]
£25.00

Raymond Clarence Ewry (1873-1937) - USA – Standing Jumps. Ewry had polio as a child. His doctors prescribed an exercise regime based on jumping for his recovery. He built up formidable leg muscles and grew up to become a champion jumper. In the standing high jump, there was no run up. The contestant threw one leg over the bar and sprang up pulling the second leg over the bar as the first came down on the opposite side. Ray Ewry could jump 5' 5” in this fashion. Between 1900 and 1908 Ray Ewry won all his standing jump contests (in both high jump and long jump). In his career he accumulated 10 Olympic gold medals, two of which he won in 1908. The standing jump contests were removed from the Olympics after 1912.
