James Lightbody (1882-1953) - USA - & Archie Robertson (1879- 1957) - GB – two long distance runners from opposite sides of the Atlantic. Here Schonberg lampoons the way US and UK commentators framed the contest of the 1908 London Games in terms of a struggle between the “scientifically trained” American athletes and the gentlemen amateurs of Great Britain. The American runner is wrapped up in layers of coats (the US athletes complained a lot about the cold), while Robertson is represented as the typical inbred Englishman. James Lightbody from Chicago was a gold medallist at the 1904 Olympics who failed to achieve his potential at the 1908 Games. He and Robertson competed in the 3,200 Meter Steeplechase. Lightbody failed to make the final whereas Robertson took silver. This, however, was an exception. In general the 1908 Games were a triumph for the US athletes.
